The term permaculture initially
meant
"permanent agriculture"
but this was
quickly expanded to also stand for
"permanent culture" as it was seen
that social aspects were an integral
part of a truly sustainable system. The word refers to a set of design
principles developed by Bill
Mollison
and David Holmgren. |
Permaculture
is a holistic ecological, social and
spiritual approach to the design and development of human settlements that takes
into account:
• food production
• building structures
• technologies
• energy
• natural resources
• landscape
• animal systems
• plant systems
• social structures
• economic structures
These are applicable to both urban and rural contexts
and to any scale of design.
It's about working with, rather than against nature.
It provides us with the tools to satisfy our needs
in a way that sustains the earth, future
generations and ourselves.
